Despite losing out on the chance to lead Nigeria into the 2010 FIFA World Cup Finals in South Africa, a position that went to fellow Swede (and former national team coach) Lars Lagerback, Sven-Goran Eriksson could still have another crack at the world stage by taking control of the Ivory Coast. He is reported to be the primary choice should the team known as ‘The Elephants’ fail to convince Russia and/or Turkey to allow them to use Guus Hiddink (recommended by captain Didier Drogba) for a month or two.
Sven has been out of a job since leaving the director of football role at League Two club Notts County. Should he take the job with the Ivory Coast, he will be thrust into the ‘group of death’ in June, taking on Brazil, Portugal, and North Korea in Group G.
