The Nigerian Football Association have looked towards the men responsible for their former colonial leader England’s previous three World Cup campaigns as their two-man hit-list to lead them to South Africa this summer. After demoting previous coach Shaibu Amodu to the role of B-team manager (after harshly claiming that a home based manager could ’cause embarrasement to the nation’), and failing to lure Turkey-bound Guus Hiddink to the vacancy in West Africa, the main targets are now Sven-Goran Eriksson (2002 and 2006 World Cup) and Glenn Hoddle (1998 World Cup).
The calm yet colourful Swede Sven could be in the fray for a long-term role after departing from his publicised position as Director of Football at Notts County due to new owners and regimes. Glenn Hoddle is seen as a good option for a quick fix, as he has a full-time commitment to the GH Academy in Spain, a second-chance venue for young players who failed to make the grade at top clubs. He will probably be able to spare a month or two…
The Nigerian team, known as the Super Eagles, are currently ranked 15th in the world, and will contest Group B of the 2010 FIFA World Cup with Argentina, Greece, and South Korea.
