Morocco have filled the void as the host nation of the 2011 CAF U-23 Championship, after North African rivals Egypt withdrew from the hosting rights following security fears.
The 8-team tournament, which will double as Africa’s qualification process to the 2012 Olympic Games Football Tournament , is the inaugural edition of CAF’s latest tournament, and it looks as though 2015 African Cup of Nations hosts Morocco will be welcoming the contenders on 26 November (and last through to 10 December).
Former hosts Egypt will start the tournament with their match against Gabon, while Ivory Coast and South Africa fill out Group A. Morocco will be joined in Group B by Nigeria, Algeria, and Senegal, with the top 3 teams in the tournament booked in to the Olympics next year, while the 4th-Place side will meet their Asian counterparts in a Play-Off in Coventry (England) on 12 April. Matches for this tournament are to be played in 2 unconfirmed stadiums in Marrakech and Tangiers.
In other news related to CAF tournament hosts, the co-hosts of the 2012 African Cup of Nations, Equatorial Guinea, have under 100 days to recruit a new coach, after Henri Michel left the post (with his assistant) on Wednesday. Africa has plenty of international tournament action to look forward to over the next few months, but which nations will be celebrating at the end of them?
