Another ultra-enthusiastic commentator incident again occurred at a World Cup. In the 2006 Round of 16 tie between Italy and Australia. When Fabio Grosso went down in the last minute and won a penalty, Chinese TV commentator Huang Jianxiang went into a state of pure lunacy, and those that could translate Mandarin later reported that this was a pro-Italian (and anti-Australian) tirade. One of his quotes from the broadcast was as follows:
“Goooooal! Game over! Italy win! Beat the Socceroos! They do not fall in front of Hiddink again! Italy the great! Italian left back the great! Long live Italy! Happy birthday to Maldini!! Forza Italia!!”
He eventually apologised for his blatant bias in front of millions, and his excuse afterwards for his tirade was that the Aussies reminded him of a New Zealand side that beat China once in the 1980′s…
