Ledley King’s suprise England call has been short-lived, coming to a premature end after FA medics confirmed that his chronic knee condition was currently unsuitiable for playing, and that a return to Tottenham will assist his recovery.
His international comeback has been curtailed after England allowed him to return to Tottenham. News that Fabio Capello had included the Spurs defender in his squad for the forthcoming friendly with Slovakia and qualifier against Ukraine raised more than a few eyebrows.
A recurring knee injury means that, despite his lofty reputation, and good current form, King has just 19 caps to his name and remains unable to train day-in and day-out with his club.
Harry Redknapp was irked by the decision to call King up so will no doubt be soothed by the England medical team’s decision to release him from their training camp in order to return to Spurs.
The Football Association confirmed news of King’s departure via a statement released on their official website on Tuesday afternoon.
“Ledley King has returned to Spurs Lodge to continue his rehabilitation over the course of the international break following discussions and assessments overnight by the medical staff of both the club and the England national team. It has been agreed by both parties that the best interests of the player are served by continuing his individual training programme at the club and he will play no further part in England’s preparations or participate in the friendly against Slovakia or the World Cup qualifier against Ukraine.”
King sat out England training on Tuesday morning alongside fellow knocks Shaun Wright-Phillips and Peter Crouch.
Fabio Capello claims that the saga is far from over, as King is a part of his plans for England’s campaign.
