BARCELONA (aet) 2-1 ESTUDIANTES

Barcelona are the new club world champions after defeating Estudiantes in extra time in the final in Abu Dhabi on Saturday. Mauro Boselli had given the Argenties the lead (37′), but the European champions hit back late on through Pedro Rodruiguez (89′). World Player of the Year candidate Lionel Messi got the extre-time winner (110′) with penalties looming. The result means that Barcelona win the trophy at the second attempt (they lost the 2006 Final to Internacional of Brazil), and taking the title from 2008 victors Manchester United. It is their 6th trophy of the calendar year.
Meanwhille, South Korean club Pohang Steelers took the bronze medal after overcoming Atlante (from Mexico) on penalties after a 1-1 draw (no extra-time was played). New Zealand team Auckland City, representing Oceania, had won against TP Mazembe (DR Congo) on Wednesday by 3 goals to 2 to take 5th, and Al-Ahli, representing the UAE as the host nation’s champion, finished in 7th and last after losing the opening game to Auckland.
