Argentina sealed a place in South Africa after another late victory, this time over fierce rivals Uruguay in Montevideo. Substitute Mario Bolatti got the goal with 6 minutes to go, prompting more wild celebrations from Argentine coach Maradona, although this time it was minus the belly slide. Argentina now claim 4th place in the South American zone, and the last automatic spot. Uruguay still have a chance though, as 5th position gets them into a two-legged play-off with the 4th place side from North America.
That team is Costa Rica, after a goal conceded in the 5th minute of injury-time against the USA consigned them to a 2-2 draw, allowing the automatic place to go to HONDURAS, who defeated bitter rivals El Salvador 1-0 to make the finals for only the second time.
Last night’s results mean that the grand total of qualified nations is up to 23. Just 9 spots left now…
