33-year-old Brazilian striker Ronaldo has announced that he will retire from football when his new contract with Corinthians expires at the end of the 2011 season. He has had a long and distinguished career which has included 3 FIFA World Player of the Year Awards, 2 Ballon D’or’s, and the record of the most goals at FIFA World Cup Finals Matches (15 in total), amongst countless individual honours, also helping his country to win 2 FIFA World Cups, 2 Copa Americas, a FIFA Confederations Cup, and an Olympic Bronze Medal.
Ronaldo has also played for some of the biggest clubs in the world, including Cruzeiro, PSV, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, AC Milan, and current side Corinthians.
He still harbours realistic hopes of finding good form and competing at the World Cup this year, but feels that 2014, which will be held in his native Brazil, will be a step too far for him.
