West Ham United striker Dean Ashton has announced his decision to retire from football aged just 26. The move comes after an injury-hampered spell with the Hammers has restricted him to just 56 appearences since January 2006, only just more than what he managed at previous club Norwich in one year (46). The recurring injury has been with his ankle, and was sustained after a bad tackle from Shaun Wright-Phillips in an England training session in 2006.
Ashton began his career with five seasons at local club Crewe, before signing for then-Premier League Norwich, but half a season after their relegation he was sold to West Ham for £7M. He also managed one England cap, in a friendly against Trinidad & Tobago in 2008.
He is currently threatening to sue Wright-Phillips (and the winger’s club at the time, Chelsea) over loss of future earnings.
