TOTTENHAM 9-1 WIGAN

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez claimed that he was ‘embarrased’ at his side’s 9-1 capitulation away to Tottenham on Sunday. The goals were scored by Peter Crouch (9′), Jermain Defoe (51′, 54′, 58′, 69′, 87′), Aaron Lennon (64′), a Chris Kirkland own goal (88′), and Niko Kranjcar (90+4′), with Paul Scharner (57′) getting a solitary reply for the Latics in an action-packed second half. Defoe’s efforts put him at the top of the Premier League scoring charts, with manager Harry Redknapp labelling him as the ‘best finisher in England’.
The result is the second-biggest win in Premier League history, surpassed only by Manchester United’s 9-0 triumph over Ipswich in 1995.
The Wigan players, meanwhille, have offered to personally refund any away fan who made the disappointing trip south.
