After leaving world champions Manchester United for the glamour and huge money at Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo has taken a parting shot at the Premier League, claimng that La Liga is “superior”.
Ronaldo’s record move was made official, as he swapped Manchester United for the Spanish giants as he wass presented to the fans and media on Monday evening following his £80m move.
And the Portugal winger said: “I think La Liga is going to have more quality because of the players that are arriving. All the players have a lot of quality and the referees protect the players.” This, of course, from a man who has a notorious reputation as a diver.
Ronaldo’s arrival follows that of fellow big-money signing Kaka last week. More than 50,000 Real Madrid fans are said to have turned out to welcome the Brazilian playmaker, who signed from AC Milan for a reported fee of £56m, and Ronaldo’s bow was expected to, and did, draw an even larger crowd when he was presented yesterday.
In a statement posted on its website, Real said Ronaldo’s unveiling “could very well have made history”. The current record turnout for an unveiling of a player goes to Argentina’s Diego Maradona who drew 75,000 people when he was presented at Naples in July 1984 after joining the Italian side from FC Barcelona. Portuguese international Ronaldo equalled that feat, and was presented with the number nine shirt by the most famous player to wear it for the club – the legendary Alfredo di Stefano.
And the new Galactico also believes that Real’s £200m spending spree this summer, which has resulted in Karim Benzema and Raul Albiol also agreeing to switch to the Bernabeu, edges the Spanish league ahead of England’s top flight in terms of quality.
He stated: “Both leagues are going to be very good but I think that with Real president Florentino Perez`s signings the Spanish league is superior to the English. It’s going to be a magnificent competition in Spain this year.”
Although some of these points may be valid, let’s not forget that this is the same Ronaldo that said that he was being treated like a ‘slave’ at Man U, and is of the belief that a pink flower accessories, tight shorts, and waxed legs are ‘acceptable’. He may be better off to let his feet do the talking.
