Sir Alex Ferguson wants to retire when he overhauls Liverpool’s record number of titles, according to son Darren.
The Peterborough chief is doing a marvellous job as the London Road outfit are on track for promotion to The Championship but believes it is difficult to envisage an all-family affair in a Premier League fixture.
Ferguson Snr is challenging on all fronts with Manchester United this term and some reckon the 67-year-old is waiting for the right time to step down, and has set a possible deadline of the end of the 2010/2011 season before he calls it quits.
“His health is fine and he’s building a new team,” declared Darren Ferguson. If they win this year, then they catch Liverpool in terms of league titles won. That will be in his mind. I can see him doing this year and next – and then that might be it for him. I don’t think Dad will wait for me before he retires – there’s no guarantee I’ll get to The Premier League. But, as a club, we do have a plan to get there. We are ambitious.”
On Sir Alex’s front, however, he may want to hang around a bit longer if Liverpool’s resurgent form continues, which may give Darren a chance to put one over his Dad.
