England will play Wales in Group G as part of their campaign to qualify for Euro 2012 after the draw in Warsaw on Sunday. The other teams in the 5-strong group are previous co-hosts Switzerland, Dimitar Berbatov’s Bulgaria, and the rapidly improving Montenegro.
Of the other home nations, Ireland will feel confident of topping a group containing Russia, Slovakia, and Macedonia in Group B, Northern Ireland take on current world champions Italy in Group C, and Scotland face Euro 2008 winners Spain in Group I.
Some of the other major showdowns will include Germany taking on rivals Turkey, Austria, and Belgium as part of Group A, and Portugal’s rematch against Denmark (from World Cup Qualification) in Group H.
The Qualifying Stage will begin on the 3rd September, before ending on the 11th October 2011. The top team from each group and best group runner-up will qualify alongside co-hosts Poland and Ukraine, while the 8 remaining 2nd-place nations will be paired for a two-legged play-off, with the 4 winners completing a 16-team line-up for the main event in June 2012.
The specific fixtures for each team must be agreed by the nations in their respective groups within 40 days.
